THE RUSTIC CHARM OF PUGLIA: STAYING IN A TRULLI RESORT
The region of Puglia in Southern Italy is a summer destination attracting both locals and foreigners. Thanks to the turquoise beaches by the Adriatic Sea, fresh produce and seafood, as well as whitewashed cities. One architectural sight you'll see everywhere is the trullo. It is a white limestone cottage with a cone-shaped roof. What makes these structures unique is that the stonework holds together without mortar. These buildings once served as temporary field shelters and storehouses, as well as living quarters for landowners and agricultural workers. Nowadays, most of these trulli have been converted into rental properties, hotels, and resorts.
During a family vacation a few summers ago, we discovered the Pugliese countryside at I Trulli di AcquaRossa. Located between the cities of Ostuni and Cisternino, you can best reach the property by car, and in general get around Puglia most easily. This resort's cozy decor and peaceful outdoor areas create a relaxing atmosphere. The main courtyard has a mix of wooden furniture, dried cactus pads, and hanging wine bottles and bird cages. There is even a pool by the garden where we swam each day. Though one of the simple pleasures I enjoyed most was having breakfast every morning in the courtyard. The friendly staff served seasonal fruits, warm breads with homemade jams, fresh mozzarella and other cheeses, and even crepes. Dining all'aperto for any meal is essential during summer in Italy, including in Puglia!
Exploring the Towns of Puglia Italy
Puglia, like other regions in Italy, does a fantastic job of preserving its natural and architectural beauty. You can see this in the clearwater beaches, lush olive groves, and sculptural details of the buildings. Here are some moments that I captured while we explored a few of those places.
Ostuni
Ostuni is a maze of white houses, staircases, and narrow alleyways. Nicknamed La Città Bianca (The White City), it is built on a hill and surrounded by ancient walls. The views of the countryside and the Adriatic Sea are splendid. Also, it's a lovely backdrop for taking a night stroll with a gelato in hand!
Alberobello
An astounding amount of over 1,600 trulli reside in the charming town of Alberobello. And the trulli are one of the region's UNESCO World Heritage Sites. While most structures are now restaurants, cafes or shops, some still function as residential buildings.
Locorotondo
This walled city sits on a hill and is surrounded by wonderful countryside views. The little white streets are pristine and decorated with potted flowers. While browsing a few storefronts, I caught glimpses of thriving summer plants and painted murals of the regional landscape.
