THE BEST PANORAMIC VIEWS OF FLORENCE
When visiting a new destination, I am always eager to discover its unique and picturesque landscapes. During my studies abroad and vacations in Italy, I found some of the best panoramic views of Florence. Breathtaking scenery awaits at these 12 viewpoints, from gardens and squares, to hills and terraces.
Gardens
Giardino Bardini
This garden in the San Niccolò neighborhood is my absolute favorite place! This peaceful nature spot is decorated with vine-covered arches, fountains, and stone sculptures. Then gravel pathways lead up to the most whimsical and fragrant wisteria tunnel. Walking a bit further leads to Villa Bardini, a museum that periodically holds exhibitions. Information about admission fees and opening hours can be found on the villa's website here.
Giardino delle Rose
Another garden with a fantastic view is the Rose Garden. Lush greenery surrounds you and terracotta buildings peek out from behind. It’s the perfect afternoon picnic spot! It is situated on an incline, right below Piazzale Michelangelo. Around 400 species of roses are in full bloom from May to June. Many other flower and plant varieties flourish here throughout spring and summer. It also features bronze sculptures created by Belgian artist Jean-Michel Folon, as well as a Japanese garden.
Squares
Piazzale Michelangelo
This iconic square provides spectacular views at any time of the day. People often take a seat on a nearby staircase to watch the sunset. A small restaurant next to the viewpoint serves aperitivo (pre-dinner drinks and light snacks). Also on the opposite side of this grand terrace is the iris garden, which is open during spring.
Il Duomo
Wandering through this square truly feels like being at the center of it all. This area comes alive with street musicians, artists selling handmade pieces, and crowds gazing upon the cathedral. Everything becomes more tranquil at the top of either the bell tower or the dome. Climbing can become tiring and at times claustrophobic. However, those who take on the challenge will be rewarded with a wonderful landscape. Check out the Duomo's website here for tickets and timetables.
Torre di Arnolfo
This medieval tower is part of Palazzo Vecchio (the town hall) and is located in Piazza della Signoria. Similarly to the Duomo, you can see all the monuments from a central vantage point. You can also explore nearby attractions such as the Uffizi Gallery and Ponte Vecchio.
Hills
Abbazia di San Miniato al Monte
This Romanesque basilica was built between the 11th & 13th centuries. It is another tranquil escape right in the city center. The steep climb leads to an incredible panoramic view from one of the highest points in Florence. This complex is located right above Piazzale Michelangelo, and includes a cemetery, monastery, and gift shop that sells handcrafted goods.
Forte di Belvedere
This 16th century fortification offers one of the most expansive views of Florence. Also situated on a hill, it is connected to Palazzo Pitti through Giardino di Boboli. On the opposite side are hills dotted with olive trees, cypresses, and villas. Nowadays the space is used to host art exhibitions and cultural events.
Bellosguardo
To reach this hill, you hike through quiet back roads out of the city center. Then you pass countryside villas and small olive groves, resulting in your arrival to Torre di Bellosguardo. It is an 11th century hotel that gives panoramic views of Florence that are unique to other vantage points.
Fiesole
Florence feels like a painting when you gaze upon it from this quaint hilltop town. Grandiose structures seem tiny. The noise of the busy streets fades into silence. And a steep hike up to the view point ends in a breathtaking cityscape. Additionally, the town of Fiesole itself is lovely to wander around. There are ancient ruins from Etruscan and Roman times. You can hike on the trails of Montececeri hill. Also if you are searching for a place to eat, you can choose from an assortment of restaurants. Don't forget to pick up a pastry from Pasticceria Alcedo too!
Terraces
Hotel Torre Guelfa
This tower with a small rooftop is the tallest private building in Florence. It makes for such a cozy setting to have aperitivo. It also provides a 360 degree panoramic view of the endless skyline.
Hotel Continentale
Another lovely spot to sip drinks is this hotel's lounge bar. There is a unique bird's eye view of Ponte Vecchio. On the left side you can also see the Vasari Corridor. It is an enclosed passageway connecting Palazzo Vecchio to Palazzo Pitti. In addition, you can catch glimpses of Forte di Belvedere and Giardino di Boboli.
The River
Fiume Arno
You will definitely catch some of the best panoramic views of Florence along the river. The early morning is the perfect chance to enjoy the scenery without crowds. My favorite spot to watch the sunset is Ponte Santa Trinità. The pink and orange sky fades into the horizon, and then it becomes blue hour. Also walking along the water in the evening is picturesque. The glistening streetlights create such a romantic atmosphere.
